Receive (TMS) Therapy for depression and start feeling better

TMS is a noninvasive procedure performed in a doctor’s office or clinic, like Memor health. Treatment sessions last less than 45 minutes and are typically performed five days per week, over six weeks. After completing a series of treatment sessions, almost two out of three patients feel relief from their depression.

What’s The Science Behind Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy?

So, how does Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy help alleviate depression? We need to dig into how our brains work to understand how it works.

Our brains are a collection of nerve cells with trillions of connections that control our conscious and unconscious actions, including how we move, perceive the world, feel emotions, and process information. It relies on the activation of electrical impulses along nerve fibers that trigger biochemical changes at nerve junctions. A nerve cell fires when an electrical impulse travels along its lane. It communicates with other nerve cells by releasing neurotransmitters, which create electrical impulses in other cells. However, in depressed patients, the electrical activity in some brain regions can be reduced.

Scientists have discovered that Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation can change the electrical events occurring in the brain by using magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. For depression, TMS can stimulate nerve cells in the region of your brain involved in mood control and activate areas with decreased activity.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) FAQs

Q.
A.

What is it like to receive TMS therapy for depression?

A.

During a TMS session, a focused electromagnetic coil is placed against your scalp near your forehead and delivers repetitive magnetic pulses o the targeted area of the brain. So, sometimes TMS is also called Repetitive TMS or RTMS.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is usually conducted in an outpatient setting like Memor Health. Treatment sessions last less than 45 minutes and are typically performed five days per week, over six weeks.

You will be seated in a comfortable chair, some measurements may be taken, and you may receive earplugs.

Your doctor will position the magnetic coil on your head, and treatment will begin. You may feel a moderate tapping on your head under the treatment coil, and you will remain awake and alert throughout treatment.

Following your session, you will be able to drive home, and you can resume normal activities for the rest of the day.

How is TMS different from ECT?

A.

TMS and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) are effective in treating depression, but ECT is associated with far more side effects and is significantly more intense.

ECT is performed in a hospital, and you must be anesthetized and restrained during the procedure. ECT works by applying a brief electrical pulse to the brain that medically induces a seizure.

By contrast, TMS is affordable, less invasive, and involves no downtime.

Q.
A.

Are there any side effects from Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation?

A.

TMS is a safe and well-tolerated treatment with very few side effects. Clinical studies show that the most common side effects are mild to moderate scalp discomfort and mild headaches, both of which are short term2

Q.
A.

Am I eligible to receive TMS therapy for depression?

A.

In the US, TMS therapy is appropriate for adults with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) who have failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant medication in the current episode.
